Linde North America to showcase technology that can capture CO2 from power plants, oil refineries and industrial processes

Trade News

Murray Hill & New Providence, New Jersey, U.S., 19 April 2012 – Linde North America will showcase its portfolio of carbon capture technology and experience at the 11th Annual Conference on Carbon Capture Utilization & Sequestration to be held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 30 – May 3, 2012.

The emergence of carbon capture, utilization and sequestration (CCUS) to reduce emissions of CO2 from point sources such as power plants, oil refineries, and industrial processes has become a subject of significant importance to governments worldwide.

Claus Nussgruber, head of business development, Clean Energy, Linde North America, said, "Depletion of primary energy resources and climate change initiatives are driving significant changes in approaches to energy generation and use, with major initiatives in carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS). In addition to offering an opportunity to display Linde technology and experience, this conference is a great opportunity for Linde to meet face-to-face with government and industry representatives working to drive advancements in CCUS commercialization."

With its technology, engineering and industrial gas supply focus, Linde has developed significant project experience in the development of CCUS solutions, including pilot demonstrations and scale-up to commercialization in conjunction with partners in power generation, oil and gas, and chemical companies.

At the Conference, Linde will highlight CO2 capture technologies the company is pursuing with leading power generation, oil and gas companies, including the recently awarded Department of Energy grant for post-combustion CO2 capture technology to treat flue gas from both existing and new coal-fired power plants. Dr. Krish Krishnamurthy, head of clean energy technology, North America and CCS, and Dr. Stevan Jovanovic, CCS technology specialist, will present a paper to the Conference entitled: Techno-economic assessment of an advanced amine-based post-combustion CO2 capture technology. Additionally, Linde has been an active partner in the Texas Clean Energy Project (Summit Power Project) in Odessa, Texas, providing, among other things, the Rectisol® syngas clean-up unit which will capture 90% of the CO2 from the syngas and compresses the CO2 for sale to the mature, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) market in West Texas.

"Carbon capture, utilization and sequestration" is the term given to a suite of technologies that can remove CO2 from large point sources or from the air itself. The CO2 can then be used commercially, for example, for EOR (enhanced oil recovery) or as a building block for the production of chemicals. Or it can be stored in geologic formations such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs, deep coal seams or saline aquifers.
